Boys Varsity Wrestling · Season Ends for Lakeland Wrestlers


The 2017-2018 Wrestling Campaign has come to an end for the Lakers. It has been a remarkable year under the leadership of first year head coach, Kevin Watkins. Watkins, an assistant under previous Head Coach, Charlie Long, earned the position soon after it became available. It was evident that Watkins had the necessary knowledge, leadership, and mindset to cultivate success within the Lakeland Wrestling program. A program that has rich history.

Throughout the 2017-2018 season, the Lakeland wrestling team proved to be on the path of individual and team success. Several accomplishments can be mentioned:

4th Place Finish in the NECC Tournament

  • Behind Garrett, Prairie Heights, & Central Noble

1 NECC Conference Champion

  • Alex Cary – 182lbs.

1 NECC Conference Runner Up

  • Brian Bergman – 285lbs.

10 Wrestlers Advancing to IHSAA Regional Meet

1 IHSAA Sectional Champion

  • Brian Bergman – 285lbs.

4th Place Team Finish at IHSAA Sectional Meet

3 Wrestlers Advancing to IHSAA Semi-State

1 IHSAA Regional Champion

  • Hayden Gephart – 160lbs.

3 Wrestlers Advancing to IHSAA Semi-State “Ticket Round”

  • Hayden Gephart (160), Brandon Bergman (195), & Brian Bergman (285)

The season may be over, but the future looks bright for the Laker Wrestling program! The 2018-2019 campaign will provide many more accomplishments and accolades. All roads will lead to Indianapolis and the IHSAA State meet for several returning wrestlers. #PunchThatTicket
